The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Transition Comes After Lukewarm Response

Brinkman assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's lackluster early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed team members about this strategic move through an internal memo, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the requirement for a clearer game identity.

The president noted that the team is now reimagining the project with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

A Pattern of Key Hires

This announcement mirrors a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full text from the president's memo:

Team—

I know you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re eager for that relationship to persist.”

Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game demo was enlightening. It confirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer identity.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the criticism to consideration and reimagined the title with a refreshed vision - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.

The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To advance the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of the team. After a period of talks, Ben starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having devoted the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most popular titles in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all excited to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.

The President

Background of the Incoming Leader

Brinkman currently holds the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He earlier worked at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had stints at other industry leaders.

Game Information and Vision

The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."

"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Face the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that change every session. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Or aim high, put it on the line, and hope your squad can achieve the highest spot? The option is up to you."

Project Ethos lacks an announced debut schedule or consoles, but players can expect further news as development continues.
