Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
